Schizophrenia was not associated. Conclusions Amblyopia is associated with long-term systemic health conditions, suggesting either long-term effects of visual impairment or shared underlying risk factors. These findings underscore the need for early detection and intervention. Further research is needed to explore the neurodevelopmental pathways linking amblyopia and its comorbidities.“ - Aus dem Fulltext: „Amblyopia …is more prevalent among preterm infants, children small for gestational age, and those with developmental or central nervous system abnormalities, particularly white matter injury. Although traditionally viewed as an isolated visual condition, amblyopia is increasingly recognized as a marker of broader neurodevelopmental disruption with systemic health and psychosocial implications. … Children with amblyopia also have a higher risk of sensorineural hearing loss.10 Additionally, childhood amblyopia has been associated with motor deficits such as impaired balance, manual dexterity, and coordination. These deficits may reflect disrupted visuomotor integration during critical periods of neurodevelopment, potentially leading to long-term reductions in physical activity levels. We hypothesize that these motor deficits may influence physical activity levels and long-term cardiometabolic health. In summary, vitamin D shapes child neurodevelopment through at least three parallel pathways: 1. directly regulating neuronal differentiation and synapse formation (dependent on BDNF and the GABAergic system); 2. controlling glial maturation and glia-mediated synaptic pruning; and 3. maintaining ion homeostasis and transmitter synthesis required for E/I balance. These mechanisms collectively form the molecular basis for vitamin D as a “neurodevelopmental modifier” (Supplementary Table 1). 2.4 Specific role of vitamin D during critical child brain development windows Unlike adults, children have multiple critical developmental windows (e.g., late fetal to 2 years: synaptic burst; preschool period: prefrontal myelination).
| 05.08.2025 The Lack of Alternatives to Psychiatry is a Societal Failure https://www.madinamerica.com/2026/08/the-lack-of-alternatives-to-psychiatry-is-a-societal-failure/ From Mad in Denmark: „…We therefore have a systemic bottleneck that herds citizens into one particular framework of understanding — based on the idea of mental illness — and which often uses medical treatment to address alleged biological imbalances. Discussing the viability of this approach is not the purpose of this article — that has been done elsewhere several times before. Instead, we argue that it is problematic to leave psychiatry solely responsible for the mental health of all citizens, since this risks leaving suffering individuals alone with their suffering.” - Aus der Übersetzung: “…Therefore, we would like to explore what real alternatives to psychiatry could look like if they were to put the individual and his rights at the centre. For this purpose, we will introduce a vision for what an alternative system could look like in the future – this system we call the Danish Mental Health Service (DMH). We present this hypothetical system to illustrate that the idea of alternative systems for psychiatry is not reality-distant wishful thinking. It is both practicable and, in addition, a logical and ethical necessity for any welfare state that wants to earn that designation. We propose to put psychiatry in parentheses when we talk about the mental health of the Danes and instead create space for a discourse on the establishment and testing of alternatives that can embrace the people who today are let down by the psychiatry treatment monopoly. … The WHO* and the UN point out that the biomedical paradigm maintains psychologically suffering in outdated and reductionist understandings of their own suffering. It creates and maintains an imbalance of power in which marginalised, traumatised and otherwise in difficulty-affected persons are considered dangerous or untrustworthy. This distrust of the citizen can thus justify the violation of the rights of professionals by professionals. This is done, for example, through forced medication. Thus, there are people who do not experience the benefit of psychiatric treatment and the associated understanding framework. … Many post-psychiatric courses could have been avoided if these people had been offered something other than psychiatric treatment in the first place. We argue that time has run out from the idea that psychiatry can – or should – stand alone as a mental health care system. … Welcome to the Danish Mental Health Care System of the Future - Autonomy - Dignity - Inclusion …Finally, it will be at the centre to fight stigma and discrimination. DMH is actively working to change society's perceptions of people in mental crisis from seeing emergency citizens as sick and dangerous to recognizing them as citizens with the same rights and opportunities as everyone else.” - Examples for what support might look like. 1- The child in his context 2 – Voice hearing in a life perspective 3 – Forensic psychiatry alternative - “This is just an example of what an alternative system might look like. For example, … There was another woman who had been living on the street and in shelters, and she was refusing to give up her bag to staff. It was written in her chart as if she was very paranoid and delusional. Again, this is a person who had been living on the street and in shelters. Maybe she had experiences of having her stuff stolen. Maybe this bag was the only bag of things she owned in the world. How much experience does the average clinician have with this one bag being everything you own in the world? Do you want to give it up to someone? Probably not. Another example would be the chart of a Black trans woman who was experiencing street harassment, multiple apartment break-ins, etc. Her experiences, again, were written up as delusions and evidence of psychotic illness. This is why I say it shows us more about the clinician than it does about the person who’s being written about. … I really wish there were more understanding that a systemic critique of the Psy-complex is not an individualized critique of someone’s choice to make use of the Psy-complex, to take psychiatric medication, etc. It’s a systemic critique.
