Early work emphasized magnocellular pathway impairments and low-level visual integration; more recent findings have extended these abnormalities to the retina itself, including altered contrast sensitivity, visual acuity, and electrophysiological responses. Such anomalies are traditionally seen as downstream consequences of cortical dysfunction rather than as contributors to disease etiology. … The relationship between visual function and psychosis risk is complex. Large longitudinal studies have yielded contradictory findings: In a Swedish cohort of >1 million men, it was found that poorer uncorrected visual acuity increased psychosis risk, while corrected refractive errors in a comparably sized Israeli cohort were associated with reduced schizophrenia risk. The discrepancy likely reflects whether corrected or uncorrected acuity was assessed, indicating that the critical variable is signal quality and stability rather than visual impairment per se. Recent Mendelian randomization analyses further indicate that schizophrenia may itself be a causal risk factor for poorer visual acuity. Such bidirectional patterns are consistent with retinal dopaminergic signaling acting as a shared mechanism, given its established role in regulating both contrast sensitivity and visual acuity. …” -- Further Evidence Is Needed to Support the Perceptual Theory of Schizophrenia Demirlek C, Lizano P. This is where it becomes really absurd. Psychiatric drugs are not targeted at all and none of them can cure people. Moreover, there never was a shred of evidence that the hypothesis was true. In fact, the truth is the opposite: Drugs create a chemical imbalance in the brain, which is why many people cannot come off them again, as the withdrawal symptoms can be severe. … Science journalist Robert Whitaker from Boston who wrote two of the most important books ever about psychiatry and established the Mad in America website has said that in psychiatry, there is a door in but not a door out. | 02.09.2026 – 1. First-Person Knowledge and the Meanings of Madness: An Interview with Gail Hornstein https://www.madinamerica.com/2026/09/gail-hornstein/ “Psychologist Gail Hornstein discusses her search for the meanings of madness, from asylum artifacts and memoirs to the contemporary peer-support groups reshaping how people understand voices and visions. … Karter: This brings us to your first book, To Redeem One Person Is to Redeem the World, where you explored the life and thinking of Frieda Fromm-Reichmann. … Hornstein: …Later in her life, when she worked with people with psychotic diagnoses, she never thought about them as hopeless in the way that many psychiatrists and psychoanalysts did. … What Frieda believed strongly as a psychoanalyst was that the unconscious is present at every moment in our lives, and that people who are very distressed have had some kind of early trauma that has led to their distress. She believed very powerfully, and her famous paper “Loneliness” is on this topic, that loneliness lay at the core of psychological distress. She thought the point of psychotherapy was to create a connection, or a potential connection, that would allow the person to move out of their feeling of abject loneliness and form a relationship with the therapist. That relationship could allow them to explore the roots of their trauma and the nature of their distress in a supportive and understanding context. That was more important than any rule. …I’ve said to many professionals that there are many aspects of the history of psychiatry that are horrifying. Some are barbaric. Some are enlightening. Some are inspiring, like Frieda Fromm-Reichmann’s work. I think the Hearing Voices Movement is another very powerful example of an inspiring approach that we can all learn from.” -- Frieda Fromm-Reichmann – Infos bei Wikipedia: |

Moreover, we have been sold the myth that the best solutions for addressing mental health challenges are medications and other biomedical interventions. The urgent need for a shift in approach should target social determinants and abandon the predominant medical model that seeksto cure individuals by targeting disorders. Mental health policies should address the “power imbalance” rather than the “chemical imbalance”. That is why the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right to health Mr. Puras has called for “World needs revolution in mental health care” due to "unequivocal evidence of the failures of a system that relies too heavily on the biomedical model of mental health services, including the frontline and excessive use of psychotropic medicines, and yet these models persist". … Treatment As Usual (TAU) did not improve patients recovery, mainly due to resistance to giving up excessive medication. Legislators can solve this deadlock by following OHCHR suggestions and removing legal permission for forced drugging. | 24.09.2026 – 1. Prenatal Origins of Love and Shame https://www.madinamerica.com/2026/09/prenatal-origins-of-love-and-shame/ From Mad in the Netherlands: “…Our first relationship *is* the one with our mother, possibly beginning as an energetic, pre-physical interaction.” Aus der Übersetzung: “…If the mother is not given sufficient support or is exposed to excessive stress, her stress hormones may interfere with the formation of the thick, lush, nutritious uterine lining that the embryo needs. Many babies die during this struggle to settle in. Many of us survived this with difficulty. I invite you to be curious about what you feel when it comes to this topic. Do you feel love? Do you feel softness, fullness and warmth in your heart? Or do you feel something more like shame? Do you feel reluctant, bad, confused, maybe even sad, angry or desperate? Can our shame come into existence so early in our lives? … Earliest memory, original intelligence Unwanted as bad An attitude full of shame …Such prenatal memories are stored in those areas that develop correctly at the time of the trauma. Little ones who do not feel welcome try to protect themselves in an intelligent way, usually by staying as small and unobtrusive as possible. This will continue to exist throughout their lives in the form of a collapsed attitude. This is exactly what we sometimes call a paltry attitude. … Living heritage When the child has started his life in shame, these kinds of moments are even more important. … The shame can go back generations. … Welcoming, present and loving The way we meet our little ones in the womb and interact with them later can have harmful or healing effects. … Healing processes begin with awareness. We must recognize that babies are influenced by their experiences, even before their birth, that they experience. This recognition is most effective as it begins to raise awareness of our own early history. … If we can be present, we can bestow this presence on ourselves and the little ones that are still in the world. That's love.“ -- [Siehe dazu auch: Blogbuchgedanken – Frühgeborene] |

In a system trained to look for disorder, her pain was easily misread. In a culture that rewards silence, it was easily ignored. What arrived in the therapy room as symptoms was, in fact, survival.
